Modern Auricular Acupuncture

Auricular acupuncture is a form of acupuncture that is practised using the
ear.
The best way to visualise auricular acupuncture is to think of an inverted
foetus within the auricular cartography (ear map).
There are a full set of points within each of the ears cartography, just
as there is within body acupuncture.
There are many points within the ears, these points / areas are small in
diameter.
Patients don't have to get undressed as easy access and diagnosis is via
the auricles (ears), so it is available to all ages.
Measurement of the ears cartography at first was done by what are best
described as "beepers", these units told the practitioner that they had
found an acupuncture point.
Some practitioners still use these beeper units, with a low level of
success in treating conditions, in comparison with measuring points with a
meter.
We do not state diagnose with beepers as there can be no diagnostic value or differentiation between one beeping point and another
point beeping.
In the "early" days auricular acupuncture became known for treating
slimming and smoking addictions. With improved professional training in auricular acupuncture
using Nogier and Kropej and measuring with meters many other conditions can be effectively treated.
A
number of "home" treatment units use the beeper point finder system.
Usually the person finds that they may get some relief from their condition, yet overall they are no better, because there is some doubt about what they are treating.
They could be likened to a telephone pager beeping, without the contact
number being shown !

Modern acupuncture techniques now practised with auricular for a number of years allow
for the differentiation between points by allowing the practitioner to
measure the points within the cartography of the ear, and diagnose which
points have a priority over others.
The prioritisation of points then allows the experienced modern auricular
practitioner to see via measurements taken any underlying conditions that may not have been
mentioned by the patient.
A
typical example is an old injury, that still may be giving some problems,
this may not be of any significance to the patient but could be the "key"
to treating their overall condition.
The European Federation was founded with the objective of bringing like minded practitioners of auricular
acupuncture together and other modes of treatment utilising 'numerical'
measurement techniques.
As with most types of treatments it has evolved in time as accrued knowledge
and more 'modern' equipment has become more available to practitioners.
Since it has come of "age" with measurement techniques and professional
training, there is a realisation that auricular acupuncture is a holistic
treatment in its own right, in helping with many health related conditions.
It can be utilised by any health practitioner, no matter what their
speciality.
Needles
Government guidelines on needles are that
they should be individually packed and sterilised.
The sterilising and use of
used needles is not sterile enough.
Needles do not need to be used for auricular treatment, but can be.
This is usually up to the individual practitioner and their preferences.
Other types of treatment available are light emitting diodes (LED's),
frequencies applied by various types of probes or units, colour, magnetic fields,
semi-permanent needles (which are small needles made of various types of
metals) left in situ for a period of time, semi-permanent small magnetic
spheres.
Any combination of the above could also be applied.
Meridians
Meridians are lines of energy that traverse the body, starting at one
acupuncture point and ending at another acupuncture point, with points
in-between.
To help you visualise and give you a "flavour", the meridians could be
likened to railway lines, along the railway line we have stations
that service town areas.
The railway line then travels to a main "city" station.
The points along the meridian are similar to the towns associated with the
railway line, all taking information and services to the "city".
From that "city" the railway line travels to another city, passing
stations on the way, again carrying information and services.
The organ or tissue related to the meridian energy line, is similar to the
"city".
If information and services are reduced, then the organ or tissues start
to under function, this in acupuncture terms is called sedation.
If the information and services are working at their peak, then this in acupuncture terms is called tonification.
In an ideal situation as a simplistic view, the meridians work in a circadian rhythm of
"opposites" of sedation and tonification.
One of the main logical reasons for measurement of points is that there
is not one area that will show or that will be indicated on its own,
'there is no action, without a reaction'.
The indicated area, will affect other areas, if a practitioner is
using a "beeper", how will it be discerned as to which area or point has priority over another ?
At best, a beeper unit can only be described as using an educated guess as
to which point to treat, whether it be body or auricular points.
Modern auricular practitioners prefer not to guess, but measure,
differentiate and find out what priorities are showing for that patient.
Auricular acupuncture points are a very effective treatment, when measured.
They could be likened again to CMP body points (central measurement
points), but their action seems to be far more effective than a body CMP
in practice, especially when points are measured properly by an
experienced modern auricular acupuncture practitioner.
