What are the differences between  Modern Acupuncture (MA) and  Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) ... ?

1) The terminology used is quite different, Modern Acupuncture uses Western Medical terminology, that most people understand.

As opposed to TCM terminology that most lay people and Western Doctors do not understand.

So referral to a GP is easier by a Modern Acupuncturist if only because of this fact and nothing else.

2) The arriving at a diagnosis from the above is done in different ways.

One by taking objective reproducible measurements with experienced practitioners of Modern Acupuncture.

Whilst the higher levels of TCM use pulses for diagnosis which are not as accurately reproducible as in Modern Acupuncture, even by experienced practitioners.

How do I know which type of Acupuncture I'm going to be treated by ... ?

A Modern Acupuncture practitioner will start to take measurement readings of one form or another.

Which, with a lot of the more expensive equipment that is available today can also produce printable graphs for the patient to take with them as a reference, as to what was found.

If this is not available, then a verbal or written report is given to the patient.

A TCM practitioner would use your wrist pulses, these pulses are not your radial pulse taken by GP's or Nurses, there are 6 pulses on each wrist, of 3 superficial and 3 deep pulses.

Verbal reports maybe given to the patient for referral, which at times may be hard to understand because of the translation of TCM terminology.

If the practitioner does non of the above, and starts putting needles in or treating with a beeper unit, this is what is probably known as 'formulae' acupuncture.

In other words a set of points that are the nearest to treating your condition / problem.

It does not need a lot of skill to utilise this form of acupuncture but it can be successful in around 50% of cases.

Are Modern Acupuncture practitioners regulated ... ?

EFMA is now part of the Governmental working group for regulation and registration of acupuncture.

As a Federation we have been established since 1996 in regulating our members with a code of ethics and aims in encouraging them to do CPD's relevant to Modern Acupuncture or the many aspects of treatment allied to it.

Which would include most cases of alternative or complementary, treatments / therapies that you could think of because of its efficacy and utilisation.

This is another reason why you should ask if your in any doubt about anything with reference to a practitioner using the Federations designated letters MEFMA.

There are no Fellows, even though two practitioners elevated themselves to using FEFMA, and their membership of EFMA was terminated for life.

Just as in any other profession there are always going to be some bad practitioners for want of a better term, that get through official procedures.

Why is Modern Acupuncture not utilised more than what it is ... ?

Probably the most straight forward answer is TIME.

Modern Acupuncture can be time consuming when practiced properly.

It takes time to take measurements and readings from a person.

While looking for any underlying causes that may be causing the symptoms that the patient is experiencing or having, as being its primary objective, as opposed to just treating the symptoms.

The time perspective is also another reason why it has not been utilised more within the NHS, plus the fact that certain professions see this as usurping their position and authority.

Not the fact that it can target patients to the right specialist areas and so reduce patient waiting lists by seeing the right consultant / specialist, in the first instance rather than at a later date.

Why does Modern Acupuncture do remedy testing ... ?

It is far better to test a remedy of whatever sort, to make sure that it is going to have a beneficial effect on that persons condition / problem.

Within Modern Acupuncture remedy testing can be part of the treatment.

Everyone knows at least one person who has had a reaction to some sort of medication or remedy.

Modern Acupuncture techniques are utilised to reduce these reactions if not eliminate them, which is yet another reason for its uses within the NHS, but then again it can be time consuming when done properly.

It can also treat a person using what are known as bio-resonances or frequencies.

Are Modern Acupuncture Practitioners perfect then ... ?

No we are not perfect, we are human just like anyone else.

But, we try to use objective means to diagnose and treat our patients.

Some of the 'machinery' used can be and is in excess of £10,000 to purchase.

So if it was a con trick it would be far easier to spend a lot less money.

As strange as it may seem, this also shows the practitioners commitment, in the diagnosing and treatment of a patient.

On the other hand some measurement equipment can be relatively inexpensive, which does not mean that the practitioner is not as committed, as they utilise the same knowledge and skills in a different way to obtain the required results, by the patient and the practitioner.

By far the best practitioner to see, is one that has been recommended.

Then at least you know of someone, who has had success with that particular practitioner.

Most recommendations come from people talking about their condition and someone who has had the same or similar condition referring them to the practitioner who they had success with for their condition / problem.
